European.Escape – Santorini – December 2011

I’m just going to start off with this:  Santorini, Greece is my FAVORITE place thus far.  All you need to know about Santorini is in the pictures.  No words can even explain this place.

We were blown away by the pictures of this Pink Cave House (click link).  You can even see some videos if you Google “Pink Cave House”.  As soon as I stepped onto the front entrance, looking out towards the water, I knew I was coming back.  The thing about visiting Greece, especially the islands, in the Winter is that everything is closed.  And in Santorini, literally EVERYTHING was closed.  There were about four or five groups of tourists besides us staying in Oia.  There was one restaurant that was open, and luckily, the food was good.  We already knew it would be like this, so we weren’t disappointed.  We spent two nights here and we absolutely loved the peace and quiet, the endless wandering the streets of Oia, and the beautiful views that were NOT ruined by the crowds.

We will be back, I’m sure of it.  And it will be in October, when the crowds are dying down, but the stores and restaurants remain open before closing before the Winter.   We will definitely stay at the Pink Cave House again, and this time, we would probably rent a car.  We also want to visit some of the other islands like Mykonos and maybe Crete.  We didn’t do it on this trip because the ferry services were limited in the Winter and airfare would add up.  But Santorini, we will be back!
